For my entrepreneurship story I would like to talk about my parents. My mom went to Barry College and graduated with a major in math. My father went St. Thomas Aquinas College and then went on to law school in Delaware. Though neither one ever truly worked in the field they specialized in in college. My mother worked briefly for a bank out of college until my father graduated from law school. When they got married in the late seventies they moved to New Jersey, and my father along with his cousin bought a night club on the Jersey shore. Within a year my father bought out his cousin and started running the club with my mother. Throughout the 1980's he stuck mainly to opening owning and operating various nightclubs along the Jersey shore, and in the 1990's opened up his first restaurant. He maintained three different clubs and a restaurant until 2007 when, he closed them to build a new restaurant, which he still owns and operates today.
My parents have always been an inspiration for me as they have been able to be their own bosses and be successful by constantly adapting to the times and their surroundings. I hope that this class will give me the skills to be able to identify opportunities that I can capitalize on to make myself successful.
I really found your story to be both interesting and enlightening. My parents both also had future careers in fields not akin to what they had studied in college. My mother went to Barry for her masters in Business Administration yet her major was in communications (from weather woman to president of a hospital.. You never know where life will take you!) In this way, my mother paving a different path gives her an entrepreneurial spirit like my dad who, like yours, would open his own businesses. I hope, too, to capitalize on the skills needed to conduct business!
ReplyDeleteHi Marco! Your story was a great example of an entrepreneur. In your case, BOTH of your parents were entrepreneurs. Chapter one of our text talks about how an entrepreneur takes advantage of opportunities and that's exactly what they did. My husband's family is from the area and partied at all the clubs during the 80's, and his cousin still posts her "Throw Back Thursdays" photos on Facebook showing her and her friends from those nights. Owning a nightclub was a great opportunity your parents were smart to invest in, among the many other things they've accomplished.
ReplyDeleteI feel their story is similar to mine in how we saw an opportunity and went for it. My experience did not turn out great but I see your parents' story as inspiration to keep trying new things.
My story is a little long, but here is the link to my experience with entrepreneurship.
